Found out what was causing the gutter to bend yesterday - the downspout was clogged with maple seeds. Cleaned it out and bent it all back up and it’s just fine. Got some grit in the rain barrel from that despite the screen but the stuff is only for garden use anyway so that’s not an issue.

So I showed my sister-in-law Plant 101 and she took pretty well to it. Plants really aren’t that hard to grow. You can do some complex things but most things, (tomatoes, beans, peppers, etc.), are pretty easy.

I didn’t check my seedlings last night but I noticed that my wife’s Thyme has germinated. I set up a timer on the CF sunlight lamp so that it runs automatically. Hopefully the rest of her herbs will germinate this week.

It’s sprinkling today. Ugh. Well a least it isn’t snow. And since it’s unlikely to snow from this point on I took the plow off the lawn tractor yesterday. Haven’t put the moving deck back on but I’ll probably do that in a couple of days.

My dad mentioned my weight yesterday which irritated me a little since I’m already losing weight. I’ve gone from 275 to 263 in the last couple months. My Wii Fit age has dropped to 44 which is only 4 years older than I am physically. I’ve got to remember to get on that thing every day.

So today is the day I remove some wisdom from my head. Not that I have that much to spare anyway. ;-) That will leave yet another hold in my head for a while until it grows over. ^_^

Regardless the oral surgeon’s office wants 20% paid at time of service so I’m kind of glad we’ve got those funds lying around.

All that aside I’ll be glad to get rid of the regular pain this thing has caused me.

So I’ve decided that I don’t need a Bradley GT II for a while yet. It’s been one of my cars I’ve wanted to get for years and then convert to a hybrid. It’s light enough and it’s got enough space for batteries and a generator. But I can’t quite afford to do that yet.

I am likely going to buy insulation for the garage rafters though as that’s going to make working out there this summer considerably cooler as well as keeping it warmer in the winter. Maybe I won’t be spending an insane amount of money a month then.

Wish it wasn’t going to rain today. I’d have loved to ride the bike to work today but it t’was not to be. And it’s not going to be suitable riding weather the rest of the week it looks like.

I’m woolgathering again...

Tomorrow I get my one wisdom tooth yanked so hopefully I won’t be in pain a week from now. As I said before it truly is distracting.

Getting some of my sketches and notes together and hopefully I’ll be trying to build a few solar powered things this year. I’ve got a pack of 25 of the 7x10 Fresnel lenses and they focus to a fairly hot point even with minimal light. Still need to test a bunch of things.

Short post today so I can get some other things done at work...

I do. ;-P

More precisely I picked up the rest of the reclaimed deck wood from our former neighbor - or at least as much as I needed anyway. I collected on Saturday and he burnt the rest on Sunday. (The 10’ long 2x12’s nailed together in pairs were the heaviest. Thankfully I’ve always been able t list things like that. A little sore the next day though.)

So a friend of mine got told today that his little part of the working universe will not exist past a month or two. More of that going around. Regardless if anybody knows of an opening for a “perl wookie” in London please shoot me a private message and I’ll get it to him.

So I’ve got all the different peppers into the starter trays, on top of the pet bed warmer, and under the LED grow light. (I even printed up a sign to sit next to them in the garage saying “Law Enforcement Officers please call $foo for info.” just in case of the random window peeking person who calls because of the light. (“OMG! Pothead!”) *ahem*

March 6, 2009 11:12 AM 3/6/09

So I’m not going to go into the details but things at work have gone a little more pear shaped than they were before. I’m not losing my job and I’m not losing any pay but there’s a whole host of other things that do not make me happy. Most of my posts will have to be made at night now - at least the ones of any worth.

We were talking about the 8+% unemployment figures today and it occurred to me that 1983 was about the time my father got laid off from a place just down the street from where I work now. I’m hoping history won’t repeat itself...

I did pick up something to play with though. A 25 pack of 7“ x 10” Fresnel lenses. They should arrive some time next week. Those will be interesting little tidbits and I’m looking forward to seeing how much heat one of those can produce under different lighting conditions.

That and I bought myself a new head basket along with spare visors and gloves. It’s a modular helmet which will be less troublesome due to my glasses. The spare visors because it’s an off-brand helmet so who knows when they will be available again. And the gloves just because.

I think I’ll set up my LED grow lamp and my pepper seeds this weekend so that can get started. I’m going to need those vegetables to help out this summer.

My time writing here is up...
March 2, 2009 9:21 PM 3/2/09

If you read the previous post you might have gotten the impression that I’m angry at my wife. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Frustrated sometimes but not truly angry. I’ve only been truly angry with her a handful of times in our life together and all of those have been resolved well past this time period.

We may disagree on some things but in the end we both respect and love each other.

So the second kidney stone of my life is moving slowly on to its final destination - and kicking me in the back along with it.

I’ll be fine though. These little trials in life just seem to strengthen me. Mind you I’m not looking forward to the final destination if you know what I mean.

Yeeeouch! )
February 27, 2009 11:14 AM 2/27/09

So they did layoffs at work today. Thankfully I’m not among them but due to my being in charge of certain things I had to know a couple days ahead of time. That kind of ate at me because it meant I had to work with people I’ve known for quite some time, several years some of them, and not say a thing. Act like everything was okay.

I hate doing that shit. I know it’s necessary but I hate it with a passion. *sigh*

No pie today despite what it says below... )
February 26, 2009 11:12 AM 2/26/09

So I’m looking to move my weather center data collection off my old i1300 Thinkpad and I can’t decide if I want to use one of the more power hungry Sun U1 systems I have or get myself another Cobalt Qube system which would be quieter and use electricity but I’d have to spend money for. Spending money is not a good thing right now but I’d spend it in more electricity using the U1 as they are not exactly “green” systems.

Just rescued a small computer for a friend of mine - an interesting little thing called a Pied Piper system. A small desktop from more ancient times. ;-)

I don’t mind rescuing things like this as they are truly part of people’s heritage even if they don’t think so now. In another decade there won’t be near as many old computers around thanks to people scrapping them with great speed.

Speaking of computers... )

So I see that Congresscritter Fiendstein is trying to put anti net-neutrality stuff into an economic stimulus/spending package.

Those of you that elected the SOB should feel proud that she seems poised to represent the special interests behind closed doors where people can’t see what she’s doing.

Yeah. That’s important. It’s important to protect our corporate interests and put that in A PIECE OF LEGISLATION THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE DEALING WITH THE ECONOMIC CRISIS IN THIS COUNTRY!!!!!

So my wife and I are looking at upgrading our phones and maybe get Crackberrys instead but that’s an awful lot of money to spend right now.

Regardless I may have to get my phone replaced because _suspiciously_ it seems to suddenly reboot when tethered to my Mac. Sprint says it may be a “device issue” and to take it to a service center. *ahem* B-|

So maybe when we visit the phone store tomorrow I’ll have them look at it because I know they have a service center there.

More blah blah blah... )
January 19, 2009 10:43 AM 1/19/09

A little sore and tired today. I went to work yesterday from 9 to 4 so I could get a bunch of things done in the plant and a few other things.

Thankfully both vehicles started at least today but then it wasn’t -21F this morning either. I’m done with winter... )
January 9, 2009 11:33 AM 1/9/09

So the fireplace kept us warm until the power back on but since we have only screens and not glass doors I had to stay up with it until I was sure it was burnt enough to not pop something onto the carpet. (Fireplace doors have suddenly moved up the list but not too far as spring will be here before you know it.)

Anyway that made me tired so I left later than usual and thus hit traffic making the drive to work longer thus making me even more tired.

On top of it it was snowing and only half plowed everywhere. Yuck.

Aruba. Aruba is nice...

Anyway we’re in for more snow over the weekend. It’s supposed to come in shifts of 4 inches each. Which means I once again plow and shovel about once an hour until it’s over.

Trying to change our spending habits because we’re falling into a spending trap again. It’s not nasty but we pre-spent a bit during Christmas and I want to put an end to that. Unless my wife overrules me I’m going to happily pay off the personal loan in the credit union and then start accumulating savings. We’re still discussing it. I suppose I could pay off part of it now then wait until later to pay off the rest of it. Frankly though I want the debt gone.

That said I can see her point about wanting a buffer in the accounts but if we are careful that will happen naturally. Much thought is required on this subject...

Rescuing an AT&T 3B1 system from a local person today. It’s small and I wanted to make sure it went to a good home so I volunteered to pick it up myself. I will likely keep it but if I find a better home for it over time that will be okay too.

The power outage last night left me thinking more about how better to run things in the house. I can still reduce my number of servers but it’s going to take work to do that. I think at this point it would be more beneficial to me to get another SmartUPS or something and split the load down there. Those systems should really run more than half an hour on the UPS as they pull so little power.

Lots of things to do...

Interestingly I met a couple of kids last night while out walking to see how far the power outage spread. I talked to them at length and though they were pretty young they seemed to have a clue as to what was going on in the big picture so to speak. That gives me a great amount of hope. I’m happy to see people of that type but seeing them with a clue while they’re young is so much better.

I really hope society doesn’t beat that out of them...

The power went out about an hour ago so we lit a fire and a bunch of candles and I roasted stale marshmallow peeps.

The trick is to carmelize the outside but not burn it. ;-)

Edit: The power came back on a little while ago. Right about the time I started meditating using the candle lantern. Go figure. :-/

I so want to set up to be off the grid. I'll happily add panels to every inch of roof space and pack the crawl space with batteries. Anything to not be dependent on the grid's reliability.

A good policy to live by.

Laughing at the darkness puts you more at ease no matter which side of the coin you’re on. If you’re more light than dark then laughing at it makes you stronger because you’re filling the darkness with light. If you’re more dark than light it makes you stronger because you’re confident that the darkness can’t harm you. Either way it works out.

I try and laugh at a lot of things now. I didn’t used to and I still don’t do it enough. But I find humor in a lot more of the universe than I have in the past.

Laughter, orgone generators, singing gardens... )
