So the new job has kept me busy busy busy. The only reason I've got a chance to post right now is I had to take the morning off because my daughter got sick on the bus this morning and that means she can't be in school according to the rules.

She's sleeping quietly on the couch now and will likely be fine tomorrow. (I just woke up from a preemptive nap myself. I've been running a little stretched lately and definitely was able to use the extra sleep. That will get cleared up here soon enough as things at work are going well and I will be doing a little more dispatch and scheduling and a little less technical work. The two are supposed to be mutually exclusive and the former definitely doesn't happen as much after-hours as the latter.

In other news I reclaimed a laptop from a co-worker that had a bad motherboard. It almost wasn't worth repairing but my neighbors had me order a replacement motherboard for their laptop and I got a deal and was able to get the board for this one as well. Now all it needs is a new battery. It's a Dell Inspiron E1505, 15" Core2Duo, 2gig ram, and it was able to just up and run with my existing SSD installed with Mint 11 Linux on it. That laptop can also be upgraded to a 2.35 Ghz chip pretty cheaply but even with the old 1.6ghz and the SSD it just seems to fly. Faster than the 2.16 ghz C2D of the same year. Very strange.

Managed to get the garage connected with the house via gigabit ethernet cable. It's not pretty because I have blue Cat5E strung arially from the house to it but it works thankfully. With time and money this spring I'll get the yard trenched and a pipe put in between the two places and that'll be a great improvement. In the meantime if I find a cheap price on fiber and gbic connectors that arial cable may turn from blue to orange. What I'm most worried about with that is local lightning. If something hits close it will easily induce a current in that wire and probably kill the two switches at either end. Then I'd have to buy gigabit switches as well.

As for other things our daughter is gettng more used to not getting her way but it's still the typical teenagerism. Went to play Mahjonng at a friend's house and half the time she kept asking us if we were ready to go. That didn't work so she was a little perturbed but she didn't have a full scale meltdown so that's good.

Slightly irritated that I haven't started any seedlings yet. I've been so busy with work that I may have to just order starter plants this year. I _WILL_ have a garden this year dammit. Still really itching to have some sort of hydroponics setup but until I get other inside things taken care of that's not happening.

We're getting almost three grand back from the taxes this year (even some from the state) and while a chunk of that has to go to the mortgage this month some of that is definitely going into house repairs. Maybe I'll finally be able to buy the bags of concrete I need to fill that hole in the basement wall and start finishing out that space. That would be awesome.

Well my daughter is up and showing signs (and sounds...ugh) of still not feeling well. It's probably just the 24 hour thing my wife had the other night so I'm not too concerned. And my wife just arrived with food so I gotta go so I can get back to work. Later!

So the fix-a-flat seems to be holding up okay in the rear truck tire. So at least that’s something anyway.

Need to do the dishes when I get home. (We let them pile up a bit while we didn’t feel well.) And laundry, and steam clean the carpet, and a whole host of other things as usual.

Going rounds with an accessory dealer from E-Bay that sold me the wrong brick for my G3 Powerbook/iBook, RMA’d it for me, then sent me the _exact_ same wrong model. I think they’re confused about which model they have because the item listing said G3 Powerbooks and this is clearly not right. That means it’s most likely the kind that goes to early G4 Powerbooks. Regardless it’s a pain and I’m really gonna balk at shipping it back because they haven’t shown me that they can get me the right object.

Still cold out but not nasty cold today. It was this morning but I’m hoping those days will be fewer as we get to the end of this month. It reached 44 the other day according to my weather station at home. I wish I’d been home during that because I could have gotten a lot done.

Typing outside today and I’m having the usual problem - sunlight. When it gets warmer I’ll be able to sit at one of the picnic tables but right now that’s obviously not possible. I keep forgetting to pick up a sun shade when we have money - which we don’t this week. It’s a “lean” week.

Going to watch the President speak to Congress tonight. Hopefully he’ll be able to get all of the critters to listen but I doubt the Republicans are going to do anything but pick it apart. We’ll have to wait and see.

People are judging him after only what? A month in office? He’s cleaning up 8+ years of shit people give him a break!

Gotta go back to work unfortunately...

So after doing a little research I’ve found that a number of things can be grown upside-down from hanging planters - including my peppers.

I’m probably not going to do that but it’s an interesting proposition because it means that as long as you have good light you can grow food where you normally wouldn’t think you could.

I watched a couple on House Hunter’s International last night buy a small house with land in Spain and they were complaining about the size of the land. I’d do quite a bit to get a plot of land like they were complaining about. Just one acre would be all I’d need...

Doom doom doom doom...Frito you fool! )

Our daughter is sick today - she woke us both up at around 3 a.m. crying and then threw up at about 4:15 or so. Seeing as her cousins just got over the stomach flu I’m betting that we’re being hit by it now. Wonderful. :-|

I found out that there’s a local hydroponics place within 20 minutes of me or so. That’s actually pretty cool so I think I’m going to check them out this weekend even if I don’t buy anything. There’s also another one about an hour away that has fairly inexpensive kits. I’m mildly surprised by this but I guess things are changing.

It’s liquid out today so the rest of the snow is almost gone. I hope it stays gone but I know that it’s only mid-February so I don’t have much hope of that.

Blech. I hate dreary days.

I better stop before I start composing emo poetry. :-/

At least things are moving along in the house. I managed to get the main carpet vacuumed last night and it was fine until my daughter “decorated” it early this morning near the bathroom. Now would be a good time to pull it up and see if there’s a real floor under it or not.

I think the aluminum cans are going out this week. I don’t have the time to save them and recycle them myself so they just have to go. Just like a number of other things I’ve got.

Dammit. Grey days make me want to eat truffle pie and it’s free pie day to-boot. *sigh*

*orders the pie*

Checked into it and I can’t use the twist-off Bawls bottles I have to brew beer with. They just won’t seal properly is what I’m hearing. However I’ve managed to get the Guinness “rocket” out of their bottles in less than a minute per bottle and those bottles are nice and heavy regular crown capped bottles.

The message here is obviously drink more Guinness. ^_^

TTTO: The Song That Never Ends

This is the cold that never ends,
It just goes on and on my friends.
Some people started coughing not covering their mouths,
and now I'm stuck inside this house.

This is the cold that never ends,
It just goes on and on my friends.
Some virus from through the looking glass,
Is beating up my insides and kicking my ass.

This is the cold that never ends,
It just goes on and on my friends.
I'd like to beat the doctors within an inch of their life,
Because their medicine causes nothing but strife.

This is the cold that never ends,
It just goes on and on my friends.
Some vitamins would help this along,
But if I take them I couldn't write this song.

This is the cold that never ends,
It just goes on and on my friends.
I have to finish now because I have to spew,
I'm reaching for the tissue paper....ACHOOOO!

February 5, 2009 11:57 AM 2/5/09

So after getting annoyingly sung to by the restaurant staff I got balloons in my cube and a banner that my co-workers signed. That was okay.

Needless to say I’m glad that’s over with...

It was a nasty -1 degrees out this morning when I left the house. That was fun. Not.

Everything is breaking down at work today and on top of that a good number of things in my back pack got covered with drips of orange cold medicine since the cap wasn’t screwed down all the way on the bottle.

What a wonderful way to start off the week...

More whining about my life... )

Okay - last illness info post I promise.

It’s going away anyway despite talking to friends who have recently experienced the same thing and said it could last up to a week.

Unfortunately as well as I’m starting to feel I’m still weak. I went out to the garage to shuffle things around (like I’d planned for this weekend) and could only lift a couple of totes with a fair amount of effort. The way I’ve been describing it is the Kryptonite Bizarro pissed in my breakfast cereal.

Useless blather and red sports cars... )

The cold medicine is helping really it is! *shudders at the taste*

So we’re pretty close to some organizational milestones at home. I truly hope I can get the garage/third bedroom stuff sorted out this weekend. That would allow us to shuffle loose stuff from the rest of the house into that room and clean/organize the remaining stuff.

Having the house nice and clean will allow us to tackle other things without having the main house stuff on our minds and it’ll be easier to keep clean as well.

And hopefully I’ll be able to start the garden plants in the garage soon as well. Some of the things like the pepper plants just have to be set up and started by the end of February if I want a decent harvest from them. I’m not doing like I did last year and start too late and plant too early. I love my heated garage... )

Okay I’m exaggerating it a bit. The cold medicine and the extra sleep is helping quite a bit. I should be able to go into work tomorrow without too much trouble.

It’s very annoying for me when I get sick because it doesn’t happen often. Not truly sick enough to keep me from getting things done anyway. Usually it’s just a bothersome sniffle or a minor cough so when something hits me hard enough to keep me down I know it’s something strong enough to get past my defenses. Fortunately it also doesn’t usually last long. I don’t think there’s been more than three times in my adult life that I’ve been sick longer than a week total. *knocks on wood*

Regardless I’m truly trying to rest while things pile up at work. It’s hard not to think about those things because I have this genuine urge to fix things all the time. If only I could stop sleeping and had infinite energy... ;-)

My 8gb Lacie coin-shaped usb thumb drive just arrived and there’s two immediate things I’ve noticed about it:

So today I’ve got my once a year cold from hell. Symptoms include but are not limited to:

Clogged sinuses/nose.

Aching back.

Sore throat.

The urge to eat 12 gallons of chicken dumpling soup.

Sinker dumplings, vicodin, and sandpaper... )
