I’m so tired of media and government talking trash about different people. I won’t go into the arguments I’ve heard nor the sides taken but all of it is fairly pointless in the wake of the knowledge of where our economy and our environment is going if we don’t change things for the better.
It shouldn’t matter which team is winning if they are playing to score the same goal.
There’s a lot of buzz about Proposition 8 on the news and in other sources. Frankly I couldn’t care less who marries who as it doesn’t invalidate my marriage at all. So I guess I’m all for overturning that law again and allowing gays and lesbians to marry.
Looking at it from the point of view of someone who believes they will cycle into another lifetime after this one what happens if my currently male spirit ends up as a female? We aren’t just bodies you know and I’m all for marrying whoever you love. That leaves me the only sane choice which is to have such laws turned over if it were up to me. Because nobody should be prevented from marrying the one they love.
Proposition 8 was an election distraction tactic anyway as was the abortion issue in earlier elections. We should turn it over and move on.
Came up with a quick sketch in my mind of the internals of the rigid frame hot-air airship idea. It should be blindingly simple to build even though the internal bags would not be the standard round ones. (I can’t see why that would matter. If someone can fly a balloon shaped like the head of Darth Vader then shape is fairly irrelevant. ) The hard part is materials. I can’t design the rigid frame out of metal as that would add too much weight and I’d have to compensate by making the design larger. So plastic or carbon fiber for the frame it is.
Oddly I’m reminded of someone on http://instructables.com who built a bicycle out of bamboo and carbon fiber. The combination is a real winner and would work quite nicely. That’s an awful lot of bamboo though.
If I come up with a good sketch I’ll see if I can’t scan it and post it.
The more I think about it the design would have to be “fly by wire” or computer controlled even if it ruins that Victorian feel in the design. The sails on either side would take a number of people to operate manually and that’s a lot of manpower for something that is using hot air to lift it. It would have to be two motors per “fin” otherwise you’d have to have a return spring to pull the boom back in after you pull it away from the side. (Think goldfish fins that fold back against the side of the body.) Not sure if there’s a motor out there with enough oomph or not - something I’ll have to look into.
Got my in-laws their computer yesterday. My tier-1 tech support person *cough*wife*cough* did a wonderful job of getting it all set up for them and I thank her for that.
Now if I could just get her to check the oil in her minivan regularly... ;-)
That reminds me that I really need to clean when I get home. Because we’ve been running the fireplace now there are little bits of wood all over the place that need to be vacuumed up. And the less said about the rug in the kitchen the better. I think I might see if we can allocate some money for a smaller rug for that location this weekend. I wonder if a woven mat would do well there...
Solved the problem I had with a design of a ring of independently controlled arcs. I was having trouble because I was wondering how I was going to get mosfets to do the high-voltage switching so I could use one high voltage coil. Then I realized I was being stupid.
The design of the Iron Man style arc reactor already _HAS_ multiple coils around the outside. All I need to do is wind a smaller inner coil with 22 ga or smaller wire and then wind the outer coil with a greater number of windings (at least 2x or more) than the inner coil. Attach the mosfets to the inner coils and a 5v source and when they trigger the outer coils _should_ produce enough current during the transition to arc.
I’ll have to play with the arc distances but it could easily work. Not sure it would be useful for anything but decoration but that’s cool too.
Although...it occurs to me that you could use such a thing for a very strange engine design with a rotating valve plate. Think of it this way...
1) The intake is a common intake that has a central throat leading to the top of a number of piston chambers in a circle.
2) At the close of this intake is a plate with alternating holes. Two per piston (one intake, one exhaust).
3) The arc ring is beneath this plate.
4) As the plate rotates into position a tab on the plate triggers a hall effect sensor. The computer reads that sensor to fire the appropriate arc causing combustion on either the intake or exhaust stroke of the piston.
I’m a little fuzzy on how to turn the downward force of a bunch of pistons in a cylindrical layout into rotational force but I’m sure I’ll think of something. I suppose I could use linear solenoid assemblies at the end of the pistons to generate AC but I’d still need some sort of rotary mechanism for the “return” stroke of the pistons. That is unless I want to use heavy-duty springs.
I think I’m going to have to actually draw this one out on paper so i can figure it out...
