I'm not naive enough to think that the president is a position of golden light shooting out of every orifice but I'd rather take a vague chance on some difference than accept someone I _know_ will do poorly.
And anyway as things get worse we get closer to a revolution anyway. McCain would prevent that but only by stripping us of our rights further. How would that help us?
There are no _good_ choices in this election but McCain is certainly worse than the alternative.
