So as of Friday that was officially the last day our company had a physical office presence. We are waiting to see if the bid on the new office is accepted. If so that means we'll have an office in downtown Chicago for client meetings and company functions. Regardless that means we're working at home from this point on.

Not a bad thing as we're getting to expense out several things that shall help greatly. And I won't have to really drive anywhere so that's good.

Still that means I have a lot of work to do today. I need to dig out the path to the garage so I can put the boat motors that are in the basement out there and bring the couch that is out there into the basement. Then I have to dig my way to the shed and unbury and set up the two desks in there so I can get all my monitors working with my notebook. (For the record I'll be up to 5 total for one machine.)

That means I won't be able to plug in the heater but since I put the register into the heating duct it's only a degree or two shy of 60F down there now. And the colder it gets out the warmer it gets down there because the furnace runs more often. That said I'm going to put a second register down there in the other run so it adds just a little more.

Finished Chapter 10 of Becoming Twilight and posted it last week. Starting to get into the swing of things again but still slow going. I have to figure out where I'm going with Conversations with Raava as well as all the other stories I've let sit fallow.

Got a second Barnes and Noble gift card from my in-laws yesterday for my birthday. As I was within range of a store I ran over and got myself one of the nice hardback versions of The Hobbit (the green version) and a five book set of the Percy Jackson novels. (I put $25 on the credit card to do that but that should get easily covered by my expense check when it comes in.)

Currently driving on a donut still. The one tire that had broken a belt finally gave up the ghost and broke the bead on the rim. Gotta find a new tire come payday. Hopefully that won't be too expensive. I should buy two but that's likely not gonna happen.

Iritis is all but gone. Still on steroid drops but weaning off. Two a day for this week then one a day for next week then done. After that I go back for a visit and among other things get an updated prescription. Thinking about trying contacts again so I can use conventional eyeware things like sunglasses and such. Contacts have come a long way since when I first tried them as a kid so I'm hoping it'll be a totally different experience.

All of the above aside I really just want to go back to sleep but I can't do that. I need to get moving for a lot of reasons. It sucks but I haven't really had a break since Winter Solstice and am not likely to get one until after March 1st as I'm on call again. Still if I can actually motivate today despite the cold I should be able to get things done.

But honestly I'd love to stay inside and read my books with some hot chocolate.

So I rode the bike today. Not surprising how much I needed to do that. It wasn’t really that cold but I knew there were issues with riding so early in the season so I kept the bike upright the entire ride and kept it slow and easy the entire way. Now it’s 52 degrees and I’m enjoying the ride to/from lunch.

So my back is still killing me thanks to one Mr. Stone, Kidney. I’ll get through it but along with other things happening recently I’m more than a little cranky.

No fries or pie today. I really need to stop eating them. )

So I listened intently to President Obama last night and I liked what I heard with one exception - it’s an awful load of promises he’s heaped upon himself. I hope he can deliver both for the sake of this country and for his sake as well.

It actually rained lightly today while I was at work. There were raindrops on all the vehicles in the parking lot when I came out to go to lunch. We’re moving our way into spring just fine now.

Just rescued a small computer for a friend of mine - an interesting little thing called a Pied Piper system. A small desktop from more ancient times. ;-)

I don’t mind rescuing things like this as they are truly part of people’s heritage even if they don’t think so now. In another decade there won’t be near as many old computers around thanks to people scrapping them with great speed.

Speaking of computers... )

So there are things going on that are getting me a bit down. I won’t post them here because they have to deal with work but they’ve got me down.

I hope that I can get motivated this weekend and that we’re not covered under a buttload of snow. They’re saying ten inches but I don’t believe that.

I really want to get moving on the garden and stuff but I can’t afford to buy anything this weekend except maybe my first grow bulb and fixture.

Money money money money money we just can't keep doing this Bob! )

Yes, I’m still listening to the Agony & Irony album on repeat. ;-)

I do that with all new albums and it annoys a great many people around me that I do so. I often leave a single album on repeat the entire time I’m in the garage or when I’m writing at home.

*shrug* I’ll probably cycle out of this album and on to another one in a month or so.

Mahamana! Do do do do do! )

I’m at the restaurant today but I really shouldn’t be because we can’t really afford for me to eat like this any more. Money is tight this week.

As usual we overspent a bit but that is correctable and we have enough to pay the bills still. I need to get my office stuff set up pronto so I can get a handle on the paperwork. I’ve been slacking. And anyway I’m not going to do all the money related stuff outside anyway for security reasons. It’s not any more or less secure in the garage than the average home I just feel funny about it.

I couldn’t get to sleep last night - the mind just kept racing. But then I also have been busy and forgot to take my vitamins the last week so I’m not surprised things aren’t working right. (And yes I’m well aware of the fact that the vitamin situation is similar to having to take “meds” every day. The irony is not lost on me.) )

So the fireplace kept us warm until the power back on but since we have only screens and not glass doors I had to stay up with it until I was sure it was burnt enough to not pop something onto the carpet. (Fireplace doors have suddenly moved up the list but not too far as spring will be here before you know it.)

Anyway that made me tired so I left later than usual and thus hit traffic making the drive to work longer thus making me even more tired.

On top of it it was snowing and only half plowed everywhere. Yuck.

Aruba. Aruba is nice...

Anyway we’re in for more snow over the weekend. It’s supposed to come in shifts of 4 inches each. Which means I once again plow and shovel about once an hour until it’s over.

Trying to change our spending habits because we’re falling into a spending trap again. It’s not nasty but we pre-spent a bit during Christmas and I want to put an end to that. Unless my wife overrules me I’m going to happily pay off the personal loan in the credit union and then start accumulating savings. We’re still discussing it. I suppose I could pay off part of it now then wait until later to pay off the rest of it. Frankly though I want the debt gone.

That said I can see her point about wanting a buffer in the accounts but if we are careful that will happen naturally. Much thought is required on this subject...

Rescuing an AT&T 3B1 system from a local person today. It’s small and I wanted to make sure it went to a good home so I volunteered to pick it up myself. I will likely keep it but if I find a better home for it over time that will be okay too.

The power outage last night left me thinking more about how better to run things in the house. I can still reduce my number of servers but it’s going to take work to do that. I think at this point it would be more beneficial to me to get another SmartUPS or something and split the load down there. Those systems should really run more than half an hour on the UPS as they pull so little power.

Lots of things to do...

Interestingly I met a couple of kids last night while out walking to see how far the power outage spread. I talked to them at length and though they were pretty young they seemed to have a clue as to what was going on in the big picture so to speak. That gives me a great amount of hope. I’m happy to see people of that type but seeing them with a clue while they’re young is so much better.

I really hope society doesn’t beat that out of them...
(There's a posting bug in MacJournal 5.1.3b1 so I had to post this manually.)

There are ducks on the surface of the reservoir today.

Woke up sharply at 4 a.m. today for the second time this week so the L-Typtophan is having some effect because I was immediately awake with no drowsiness. No dreams.

I’ll definitely have to run the plow at least once when I get home and likely we’ll get more snow over the next few weeks. I just hope none of it turns out to the be “bury us alive” kind of snowstorm.

Got one of the XXXX to make XXXX but not the stuff to do XXXX with XXXX so that’s on hold for the moment. (Yes, I’m teasing my wife here a bit since it’s a spring/summer surprise for her. ^_^ )

Started working on conserving money today. For one thing I wrote down a list of things I wanted from E-Bay and then deleted most of my E-Bay watch list. That should prevent most of the impulse spending there. Though I still need to buy the rest of the XXXXs.

I’ve also decided that I’m going to try going to the restaurant only a couple of days out of the week. Mondays because it’s just a comfortable way to start the week and Thursday because it’s usually after my check goes into the bank.

This of course means that I’ll have to *gasp!* make my own lunches. I should be able to plan that pretty easy but I want to make sure it’s not stuff I wold need to cook because I enjoy getting out of the building during lunch. So probably lots of sandwiches then unless I decide to mount a microwave in my truck. (I could do it easily enough but where would I put it??) I like the idea of bento boxes but as I’m not Japanese I have no idea how to prepare one.

Been watching my congresscritters like a hawk. Haven’t looked at it today but I’m keeping an eye on them at least now. Now if we just didn’t have to wait two weeks before getting the new president.

So I figure I’ll need at least two sets of wire rack shelves if not three to set up the seed starter stuff but first I’ve got to clean out that space massively. There are people telling me to just junk the stuff there in the garbage but in all honestly I can’t do that in good conscience. I’ve thrown away circuit boards before, the odd computer part, etc. but two of these are old printers that are dead. Then there’s the buttload of chemicals that I can’t find a good disposal source for. There’s no clear path to dispose of things like thinners and malathion and such. I’m still checking on it but I suspect that I’ll have to use the industrial disposal source via work. Thankfully we don’t get charged for that sort of thing beyond our existing contract. Regardless I’ll get rid of all of it somehow.

Watched the original Dominion: Tank Police on Netflix last night. It was damn funny in an over-the-top kind of anime. I think I’ll get the DVDs because the dub was one of those horrible dubs made in the 80’s with truly horrible voice acting and I’d like to compare the subtitle to the dub just to see what’s different. Oh and if you watch it - one of the best distraction sequences by villains EVER. ;-)

Damn. Now I want a tank like the mini one in that anime. :-(

I need to sit down and start drawing again. I miss doing that but right now I don’t have the space. Maybe once all the crap gets organized.

And I need to get writing and doing a great many other things...
January 6, 2009 11:36 AM 1/6/09

Macjournal just horked and I had to restore from the copy stored on my thumb drive. (A copy that I will promptly update as soon as I post this.)

So it looks like I might have to update Macjournal just in case.

In other news....it’s snowing again. Thankfully it seems light at the moment so I’ll probably wait until it accumulates a little before plowing.

It’s okay getting back to work and I’m getting things done but *shrug*.

So other than almost losing everything I’ve ever typed into Macjournal things are moving right along.

Considering paying off the one personal loan in a few weeks here then letting the auto-deducted money go into savings. It’ll take time to build up cash but that should be okay.

My wife’s back is killing her and she should be at home in bed but she’s not going to do that because she needs to save vacation time for our trip to Montana this year.

I finished the basic layout of the garden plan for this year on the computer yesterday. Now I just need to accumulate bricks and eventually topsoil. We’re expanding it out to the end of the garage and replacing the fence with a better one. I’m also going to put down weed guard and rocks between the back of the garden and the neighbor’s fence so I can get behind the climber beans I’m going to put there AND so that I don’t have to trim the weeds there as well.

I’m trying the L-Tryptophan for sleep aid this week. So far it hasn’t kicked in but we’ll just have to wait and see. I know that melatonin keeps me awake for some reason so I can’t try the valarian/Tryptophan/melatonin comb unfortunately.

I need to seriously get cracking on the garage so I can get set up to start plants in there soon. I need to be able to do that and still be able to move the racks out of the way for vehicles if they need to be repaired. (And I still need to make a place for the “ugly green couch” as my wife calls it.) Getting organized is high on my list because after that it’s all maintenance and improvements.

Back to the grind after the holidays... *sigh*
