So...been a bit busy since December 21st. Thing haven't slowed down really. Family stuff both close and extended, work stuff - company rebranded - no not bought out just name change, money troubles, adopted a Lhasa Ahpso named Bartek, weird weather, etc.

So today and tomorrow I'm off work and after helping get the kid off to school and taking the dogs out I puttered on the computer a bit until 9 am Central. Then I crashed until my wife called me about 30 minutes ago. The body must have been worn out a bit because I hit the bed and didn't move or shift that whole time. Of course that leaves me sore a little.

So now I've eaten something and am vertical again sort of. Going to try and get moving on stuff here a little but seriously sluggish. I think it's just the wind-down from being on top of everything for 3+ months. Think I'm gonna start playing the lotto. It's about time I won. ;-P

Read On MacDuff! )

And DAMMIT ALL WHERE THE HELL IS SPRING?!?!?!?

Ponyville must be late with Winter Wrap-up again. ;-P
So as of this morning I've decided I will never again buy store bought marshmallows. My wife and I made a double batch of one of the millions of simple recipes found on the Internets. I powdered them this morning and tasted one and OMG! Awesome! Going to attempt to cover the one batch with chocolate. (If I can properly temper a bunch of semisweet chips today that is.)

My neighbor was kind enough to give me a spare regulator for my grill and I replaced the burners on it so now able to grill stuff again after years of nor having one. YAY! Grilled some corn on the cob yesterday that was WONDERFUL! Also some baked potatoes that my wife didn't get any of.

Going to start using that grill like there's no tomorrow as long as I can afford vegetables. I love grilled vegetables.
Speaking of vegetables... )
So once again the summer has passed into fall with all the gusto it usually does. Right now it's blowing considerably outside. (I think Luffy said it was 8 - 9 mph.)

And as of this morning the furnace wouldn't start up. Joy.

Did the same thing I did last year and cleaned out the vacuum barb on the pre-charger fan or whatever it is. For the moment it started up but we'll have to wait and see if it continually works.

The thing about all this is I _hate_ going into the basement crawl space. Not because it gets dirty though that's part of the issue. Not because it's a pain to get back to the furnace by crawling over dirt and pipes and wires though that's a problem too.

No. It's because of the spiders. There's always a ton of webs down there and I'm moretally afraid of spiders. The only thing I'm more wigged out by are house centipedes. I can control it but if it catches me by surprise I freak. badly.

Anyway I managed to get the furnace filter changed while I was down there as well. That is something that suffers because of my phobias.

I have a simple rule with spiders. As long as they don't appear in the public places of the house they can remain undisturbed. They enter the public spaces or make webs there and they get no mercy. I think they know this as well because oddly we only see a few webs in public places around the house. The rest are dep in closets and rafters or in the crawl space.

I'd love to dig that area out but it would require jacking up the house, digging out a whole hell of a lot of dirt, then pouring not only a concrete slab but footers as well. Not happening any time soon.

Other fun stuff this weekend will include putting all my older systems back together after tearing them all apart trying to compensate for my own mistakes. (I shorted the motherboard and power supply of my gaming machine accidentally.) I spent several hours swapping processors and ram and not one of my other systems will do what I want it to. I just don't want to have to go out and buy stuff because that would have to go on the credit card. Though honestly it would save me a lot of trouble if I just up and spent for a gaming system. I've got a 600w power supply and a honking video card so all I need it processor and possibly RAM. Though if I can find a board that takes DDR2 all I need is board and processor then.

I am suddenly amused by watching the Roomba push my exercise ball around. :-) That thing is comfortable to sit and read the iPad on. (The ball not the Roomba.)

Well...off to wash the spider-stink from me...

Oh and my friend in Japan? He's a bastard because he got to go to the Hokkaido food festival today. ;-P

So I was cloning the hard drive on my one G5 iMac so I could swap it out and then be able to properly render video for a non-profit my wife and I are involved in but the darn thing just had the power supply fail. Again. (It's done this once before.)

Now I have the old one here that I might be able to swap parts and get it back up and running but there might be a batter idea: http://ds5.org/3618

That guy has simply converted the wires on the ATX power supply to plug into the G5 iMac. I have ATX power supplies and the proper connectors so I might just do that swap myself.

All that aside of course this happens when I'm still re-arranging the workshop. Go figure. :-/

So I managed to get some things done on the technology front around here today. I swapped my old 250GB hard drive in my Macbook into an external USB box, confirmed I could boot the Macbook that way, then installed a 40GB solid state OCZ brand drive internally. (A gift from someone I worked with at my previous temp job.) This allowed me to install Linux Mint 11 and copy most of my data from my old ThinkPad R51 over for use on the Macbook.

So I heard from my friend in Tokyo and despite the radioactive tentacle monsters and zombies he’s holding on and keeping his sense of humor. To wit - “Signing in from bouncing Tokyo, where we havent felt a tremor in a half hour!”. Good to know because I was worried about him.

He did point out to me that I need to post at least something every so often simply because it keeps my stream of consciousness from fragmenting. And as usual the bastard is right on target. ;-) So I’ll try and post things in-between looking for jobs and house stuff but everything else unfortunately has to remain on hold.

As expected with gooberment functions unemployment got it wrong. (Or I did when certifying over the phone.) So they overpaid me by one week even though I had waived that week. This put me in the unpleasant position of calling them to arrange to give them back money. (I’ve had friends get really hosed in the past by not correcting this situation so I made damn sure I corrected it.) They’re sending me a form and I’ll send them a check when I get it.

In better news there’s still hope of me getting the Linux Admin job. I really really want that job because it sounds perfect for me. Supposedly it’s completely casual and it’s not far from where I drove to for a decade. I just hope I can get an early morning shift but I’m not going to argue if they want to put me on a different one. The place sounds cool and like a place I’d love to work at.

So I didn't sleep well again last night. It was a combination of things that I won't go into here. If there weren't so many downsides to taking sedatives I'd certainly consider it sometimes.

Part of it is I've been off my diet recently. Not horribly but a lot of rich food that has caused me to pick up an extra 10 pounds so I'm now 5' 7", 235lbs in my shorts. I'll rectify this shortly.

Since I’ve been off my feed due to stress and OMGWTFWHYISTHISHAPPENINGTOME! stuff I took the time to cook dinner tonight.

Tonight’s dinner - simple fajita style wraps consisting of:

3 - chicken breasts sliced in thin strips.
2 - red bell peppers also sliced in strips.
A dozen or so sliced mushrooms.
A couple of cloves of garlic sliced thin.
Parsley.
Black Pepper.
Paprika.
12“ flour tortillas.

I cooked the vegetables in one pan using high heat and about a teaspoon and a half of oil until they were slightly caramelized sprinkling with paprika until you could smell it cooking but not enough to coat them. I also tossed in a couple of pinches of black pepper while cooking.

Once those were close to finished I started cooking the chicken strips in the same way also sprinkling with paprika and pinches of black pepper to taste. Cooked those until they were done through (I probably should have grilled them) I turned it all off and served combined in the large tortillas.

Definitely tasty! :-)

Best thing I realized after all this? No salt in this recipe.

In other news I bought stuff to start putting my tomato plants into large pots until they’re big enough to put outside. I also sketched a design for a modern style standing planter with light that would look good with both mission style and contemporary depending on how you finished the outside. Now I just have to put one together. ;-)

My weather-station-fu has failed me. I kept checking the temp on my weather station logs and it kept saying it was too cold to put plants out...until I realized that the date in the log didn’t change. D’oh! So after a reset and a log adjustment I can track the temp properly again. (It _is_ warm enough at the moment to start putting plants out but I’m not done with the garden yet.)

The yard needs serious maintenance this weekend. I’m definitely going to have to mow with all the rain we’ve had. The grass is starting to look pretty shaggy. :-( Can’t seem to find my mulching plate for the tractor deck but I think that’s just a matter of cleaning.

The robin from last year is once again nesting in the upper spindles of our front porch. She must be the same bird as she doesn’t even bat an eye when I walk out to get the mail. That’ pretty cool actually. :-)

Light post today as I have much to do and am pretty damn tired still...
April 19, 2009 10:32 AM 4/19/09

So I’m drinking cran-cherry stuff again - you can probably guess why. I think the last stone didn’t break up but just stopped moving because last night on the couch I suddenly felt like someone had kicked me in the right side of my middle/lower back. Right where the original stone pains were. I’m still going to work but I’m probably going to have to bring a bottle of cran-crap with me until this is all over.

Fresh herbs on the way... )

So we had a nice dinner and visit with my aunt, uncle, and my mother last night. Went to a pizza place in a hole in the ground. Pretty cool little place. It’s been there for 60 years and it’s one of those basement dimly-lit pizza and bar places. It’s always been one of my favorites.

Took the plow blade off the tractor an voila! snow predicted for this weekend. -_- Thankfully it won’t last long.

So my right lower wisdom tooth is still giving me a pain but I’m going to stick it out next week until we have more money.

No calls from LEOs about my LED grow lamp yet but that may yet happen. Or maybe not. I honestly don’t care.

So I rode the bike today. Not surprising how much I needed to do that. It wasn’t really that cold but I knew there were issues with riding so early in the season so I kept the bike upright the entire ride and kept it slow and easy the entire way. Now it’s 52 degrees and I’m enjoying the ride to/from lunch.

So I’m considering adding the RPG/400 programming language to my skills because it’s an in-demand skill on a regular basis. Even though I’m trying to reduce spending I ordered three books today from E-Bay and Amazon to the tune of $30 total. But even with the books unless I can find an AS400 emulator or pick up a system somewhere cheap that’s going to be an issue. I turned down one years ago because of space so there’s that bit of suckage involved in this as well. :-(

March 2, 2009 9:21 PM 3/2/09

If you read the previous post you might have gotten the impression that I’m angry at my wife. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Frustrated sometimes but not truly angry. I’ve only been truly angry with her a handful of times in our life together and all of those have been resolved well past this time period.

We may disagree on some things but in the end we both respect and love each other.

March 2, 2009 10:57 AM 3/2/09

So the second kidney stone of my life is moving slowly on to its final destination - and kicking me in the back along with it.

I’ll be fine though. These little trials in life just seem to strengthen me. Mind you I’m not looking forward to the final destination if you know what I mean.

Yeeeouch! )
February 27, 2009 11:14 AM 2/27/09

So they did layoffs at work today. Thankfully I’m not among them but due to my being in charge of certain things I had to know a couple days ahead of time. That kind of ate at me because it meant I had to work with people I’ve known for quite some time, several years some of them, and not say a thing. Act like everything was okay.

I hate doing that shit. I know it’s necessary but I hate it with a passion. *sigh*

No pie today despite what it says below... )
February 26, 2009 11:12 AM 2/26/09

So I’m looking to move my weather center data collection off my old i1300 Thinkpad and I can’t decide if I want to use one of the more power hungry Sun U1 systems I have or get myself another Cobalt Qube system which would be quieter and use electricity but I’d have to spend money for. Spending money is not a good thing right now but I’d spend it in more electricity using the U1 as they are not exactly “green” systems.

February 25, 2009 11:14 AM 2/25/09

So I listened intently to President Obama last night and I liked what I heard with one exception - it’s an awful load of promises he’s heaped upon himself. I hope he can deliver both for the sake of this country and for his sake as well.

It actually rained lightly today while I was at work. There were raindrops on all the vehicles in the parking lot when I came out to go to lunch. We’re moving our way into spring just fine now.

Power brick asshattery under the cut... )
February 23, 2009 11:08 AM 2/23/09

So after doing a little research I’ve found that a number of things can be grown upside-down from hanging planters - including my peppers.

I’m probably not going to do that but it’s an interesting proposition because it means that as long as you have good light you can grow food where you normally wouldn’t think you could.

I watched a couple on House Hunter’s International last night buy a small house with land in Spain and they were complaining about the size of the land. I’d do quite a bit to get a plot of land like they were complaining about. Just one acre would be all I’d need...

February 20, 2009 11:06 AM 2/20/09

And by the I mean 4 to 9 inches of snow. Bah!

(Yes, yes, I know snow isn’t really evil. Yes I know it’s a necessary part of life. Yes I’m just being irritable about it.)

Can we be done with the snow and move into the constant rain already? I’m so done with winter...

And here I was just getting ready to tear into the garden space. Oh well I need to get a permit for the new fence anyway.

My mother is stopping by during Spring Break so the remote support application is moot as I’m just going to tell her to bring her computer down with her and I’ll fix it here. That will save me some headaches and maybe I’ll have decided on a remote desktop application by that time.

Potentially canned babble behind the cut... )
