Checked the bank account today, like I do every morning, and it's got $20 and some change in it.

W. T. F.

Look at the transactions and find that our life insurance has increased from $24 to $67. *facepalm*

I just got my positional increase that put about...$60 extra into our account. I am SO tired of never getting ahead.

On top of all that my wife got a notice yesterday that he check might not appear in our account on Friday as expected due to a "computer glitch". Aka someone failed to do payroll on time or forgot to submit it or something.

Definitely not cross-posting this to my LJ otherwise I'd get a phone call from my mother.

And this one wasn't even for work. :-(

I awoke in the middle of the night. Went to get some water and something to eat. Noticed the cheese was not as cold as it should have been in the fridge...in fact the fridge is not as cold as it should have been...

Crap. (Actually I used another word here but I shall refrain.)

So as is my wont I Googled it and found that it was most likely a defrost issue in that the condenser coils were clogged with ice.

Found this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaRyNiPn26o

That actually happens to show the exact model fridge we have.

Watched all of it and immediately set the defrost timer into defrost mode. Waited. Nada. Still frozen. So here at 3 am I am taking apart the freezer section of my fridge to find that it is a veritable cornucopia of frozen coils.

Grab the heat gun - cord's too short - down my wifi for a power strip. Thaw the coils completely. That officially buys us a week to get parts in. While I'm putting it back together it goes back into regular mode. That means the defrost timer is probably good.

So I stuff everything back in the freezer, noting that I need to put a water filter on it as the icemaker is covered with minerals, and get on E-Bay and promptly order a defrost timer and the freezer thermostat. Those are the two most likely candidates but I also put the heating element on my E-Bay watch list so I can order that when I get paid.

So I'll replace those parts, straighten the fins that are bent, and we should have a working fridge again. (How do fins even get bent behind a complete cover anyways??)

Were we in better standing I would prefer to buy a new fridge. A side-by-side with a dispenser on the front for water and ice. Black or stainless as my wife wants a cranberry colored kitchen. But...we're not...so we get to repair the ancient fridge with no Energy Star rating on it. Glad I'm already used to my electric bill being high with all the computers. ;-)

And now...it's 4 am and I have to get up for work in a half hour to an hour.

Crap. (Again...another word here.)

So...been a bit busy since December 21st. Thing haven't slowed down really. Family stuff both close and extended, work stuff - company rebranded - no not bought out just name change, money troubles, adopted a Lhasa Ahpso named Bartek, weird weather, etc.

So today and tomorrow I'm off work and after helping get the kid off to school and taking the dogs out I puttered on the computer a bit until 9 am Central. Then I crashed until my wife called me about 30 minutes ago. The body must have been worn out a bit because I hit the bed and didn't move or shift that whole time. Of course that leaves me sore a little.

So now I've eaten something and am vertical again sort of. Going to try and get moving on stuff here a little but seriously sluggish. I think it's just the wind-down from being on top of everything for 3+ months. Think I'm gonna start playing the lotto. It's about time I won. ;-P

Read On MacDuff! )

And DAMMIT ALL WHERE THE HELL IS SPRING?!?!?!?

Ponyville must be late with Winter Wrap-up again. ;-P
So many things afoot at our household. That and work is why I haven't been posting.

Work itself seems to be going well but busy. Looking forward to several things including another visit from my friend from Tokyo among other things.

Mundania abounds it seems. Had to move my boat into the driveway today as I got a letter from the city saying it had to be off the grass. Thankfully we have the space to do that. I talked to the inspector and she said that as long as it's on a hard surface that the grass can't grow through it is acceptable. So seeing as I'm going to go with raised beds anyways that means I can put down landscape fabric and patio stones behind the garage and store it back there. Will also likely winterize and store the bike back there as well once I'me finished working with it. Need to call her back and confirm my suspicions that a pole and fabric structure is not considered permanent. If that's the case then I'll put up one of those temporary tent style garages back there and that will keep the weather off the boat and bike and I won't have to get expensive covers for them.

Speaking of money have to spend more of it on the Neon as it is required to have an emissions test in January. Kind of annoyed by that as they sent out a letter a couple of years ago that they will not be testing anything older than 2000 and Dorothy is a 1998.

I should be out repairing the brake line on my truck but I'm sitting here listening to a jiggle canner. Today's canning is three quarts of chili without beans, two quarts of water, and two experimental quarts of unsweetened green tea that I cold brewed. Not sure how that last one is going to come out but if it works then I can make and store up green tea indefinitely and save myself a lot of time. (I drink a LOT of green tea daily.)

Finally got us switched over to Comcast Business Class for our Internet. All the servers and DNS are all moved over and so far things seem to be working without issue. In our area at least Business Class and Residential use two different support groups so the experience is VERY different. And I'm paying what I was paying with the other DSL service and getting 15x more speed. And for those of you techies out there that run your own equipment they will put the router in Bridge Mode if I ask. :-)

Still no word on if the office is moving or not. Hopefully we'll find that out soon. The one lady at the office said that if they sell it likely means working completely at home for up to a year. I can easily work with that. With the upgraded connectivity and a Skype phone number I can forward my work line to it seems to function quite well. Some odd issues related to Skype but nothing I can't take care of.

All that aside I'm going to focus on getting at least the basics resolved in the basement and move my computer space down there. That way I don't have to heat the workshop as much during winter. (We used 1300 therms last February) Unfortunately I don't think I'm going to be able to get the large computer rack down there without altering the door. I may have to just build one in the corner. I've got another rack that might fit but it has no sides and is about twice the weight. Time will tell. Cleaning up any moisture and electrical issues down there come first though.

Things I've been reading....some of it is fanfic from MLP:FIM circles but two books I read and loved were the Order of the Air books by Melissa Scott. Well worth reading. Also just bought and started War Maid's Own by David Weber. We'll see how that one pans out. I'd like to read more Seanan McGuire stuff but I'm so far behind it isn't funny. The last book I read by her was A Local Habitation. I just can't afford to pick them up right now. Hopefully I'll be able to pick a couple of her books up by Yule.

Money seems to be getting a little better but I'm not going to focus on that. I'll just keep holding back on most of the spending and keep moving forward. Patio stones and exhaust parts for Dorothy are high on the list of next things to buy. Just keep plugging away at it...

Anyways I'm going to go back to listening to the canner jiggle and I promise I will try and post more often. :-)

So we got some things done in the yard yesterday thanks to the minions lent to me by The Duck (my sister - I'll explain that later) and I paid them according to what I felt they did.

And I was not unimpressed. They worked and worked well and did not complain. That was well worth the money. The Duck makes good minions.
Rambling among the brambles... )
So as of this morning I've decided I will never again buy store bought marshmallows. My wife and I made a double batch of one of the millions of simple recipes found on the Internets. I powdered them this morning and tasted one and OMG! Awesome! Going to attempt to cover the one batch with chocolate. (If I can properly temper a bunch of semisweet chips today that is.)

My neighbor was kind enough to give me a spare regulator for my grill and I replaced the burners on it so now able to grill stuff again after years of nor having one. YAY! Grilled some corn on the cob yesterday that was WONDERFUL! Also some baked potatoes that my wife didn't get any of.

Going to start using that grill like there's no tomorrow as long as I can afford vegetables. I love grilled vegetables.
Speaking of vegetables... )
...not.

I looked over the finances this week and it's going to be another tough end of the month for us. Partly because frankly we're spenders. And quite frankly I'm the worse of the two of us but my wife has her share.

So....I've just deleted all of my E-Bay and Amazon lists. Everything on them is now gone. And I know that with my memory most of those things aren't coming back. If I want something from E-bay I will have to look it all up again and make the choice as to if I want it.

The only things I did put back on there is a $59 gable fan for the workshop so I can cool it without having to run the A/C unit out there and a $100 solar attic fan which would be the ideal to cool the house. Though looking at that item it looks like a solar panel and four muffin fans in a frame. I might be able to make that one.

Regardless I need to rein it all in. I might even have to give up my paid accounts on a lot of things an go back to free accounts. Some things like Torn World I'll still support but there are a fair amount of ducks nibbling us to death that I can easily remove. I'll just have to go through them all.

There's so many things I want. So many things I really need. But what I want most of all is that feeling of being stuck to go away. And the worst thing is I keep remembering how much money we squandered when I worked my network manager position. Very little of it saved and very little of it invested. That one always hits me in the pit of my stomach.

That said, a fair amount of that money (just like current money does when we're flush) went towards giving somebody a hand up. I don't donate to organizations but the universe never once left me without someone I could help in some way.

And that's money well spent. I'll never regret that portion.

But the rest of it....very very grasshopper. Very little ant.

So last night I was out of beer. The horrors!

I ran to the local mega-mart and was trying to decide on something nice to drink and was about to settle for an import when I spotted three different types of brews from a place called Metropolitan Brewing. ( http://www.metrobrewing.com/main/index.html ) Brewed right here in Illinois. They had three different types:

Krankshaft - http://www.metrobrewing.com/beers/index.html

Dynamo - http://www.metrobrewing.com/beers/dynamo.html

Flywheel - http://www.metrobrewing.com/beers/flywheel.html

I chose the six pack of Dynamo and took it home. And...it was awesome. I like craft beers and this one was definitely excellent! It was smooth with just a hint of bite to it. Nice flavor though my descriptive ability for tastes is lacking so I can't compare it to anything. I finished three of them over microwaved meals while I was working out the the workshop last night. Here are some more reviews of it: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/19127/47292

Speaking of working out in the workshop... )
So...long time no post. Okay yeah you heard that before.

Sorry. Been extremely busy. Work mostly. Catching up at home due to having finances able to be organized and able to repair/replace things now.

For the record I don't like credit cards. But they do come in seriously handy if used correctly. And they are especially good for Oh Shit! moments.

Let's see...where do we stand... )
23:51 PM 07/23/2011

Today I spent a fair amount of time customizing the accidentally wiped machine I mentioned yesterday to get all my stuff back. This of course led me to discover several nice surprises.

So we went out today and I made my wife spend money on herself because she's been financially constipated lately and that can lead to some ugly binge spending when money _does_ come in. She got herself some things, I got myself some things, and fun was had by all. (We reserved the state tax money, a mortgage payment, and paid bils first.)

So they finally secured the wifi at the restaurant like I've been telling them to do for quite some time now. Good. I'd hate to see my credit card data taken by someone with a wifi pineapple. (Look that one up on your own - it's interesting.)

Somewhere in the evening the ponies took over my brain and I wrote what I posted. That was interesting because I like it and it feels right for where we _should_ be headed as people in general. Unfortunately we're not there yet.

So...after studying for another week...I took another test online today for my CCNA...

...and got a 58%. (Previous scores include 74%, 80%, 84%, 76%, and 74% over the last three months.)

*headdesk**headdesk**headdesk**headdesk**headdesk**headdesk**headdesk**headdesk**headdesk**headdesk*

I'm so tired of this. It just never seems to end or even slow down.

After I figured I finished writing out my latest story for Torn World the canon board handed me a ton of edits for it. Some rightfully so but frankly I'm just not in the mood all of a sudden. (I know it isn't but it feels like just another failure. Not their fault though.)

All hail the passing of the plague. The first day I just didn't feel like getting out of bed and indeed slept an extra 4 hours at least that morning. The next day after taking cold medcine I slept well enough except that I slept in the wrong position and kinked my neck badly and have been sore the next day or two after.

All that seems to have finally gone away and I'm feeling well today.

So we’re going to have some money coming in here from another source and that will help cement our vacation later this year. It’s also going to buy more rain barrels for the house, the right jets for the carbs on my bike, and whatever my wife wants to spend her share on. Oh and fence posts for the garden fence.

Beyond that the rest can stay in one place as far as I’m concerned. Likely if we don’t spend it I’ll put some of it back into the credit union account.

The temps seem to be staying above freezing at night lately - at least in our local area - so I should be able to start work on the fence pretty soon. I also am seeing ads for tomato plants on the TV so I might be able to get a young plant to give to my SIL when doing Plants 101 at the house. I still need to pick up a heat gun for that.

No sign of the seedlings sprouting yet. I need to set up some sort of auto-watering for them. I forgot to water them last night. There should still be enough moisture in the soil that they aren’t hurting. I’ll water them when I get home.

Lots of leaves left to rake up from last year. I hope it dries out here over the next couple of weeks so we can get those picked up. Not sure when the spring yard waste pickup is but we already have the bags for it. (Have to buy stickers _in addition_ to the bags...grumble...grumble...) If those leaves don’t go into bags then I don’t know where they’re going to go as I don’t have a spot for compost yet and won’t with the garden expansion.

Thinking about having a friend of ours bring over one of the yard rollers that flattens the yard out. It’s more than a little bumpy and flattening it would probably be a good thing. I don’t think the hitch point on my tractor will pull it though because those are so heavy but I may be wrong.

Gone like the fiscal responsibility of the last eight years but back to work like the current administration...

So I pick up the referral for the oral surgeon today so I can schedule it for next week. And none too soon either as my mouth is definitely not a fun place to be right now.

Spent money today to get myself a video card from CDW for my desktop out in the garage. Some of it I already had allocated and the rest I can make up from other sources so it’s not too bad.

Did I mention that painful teeth are seriously distracting?

So with the exception of the one sump-pump house I don’t think anything we saw this weekend was a real candidate. So rather than “reverse Walnut Tree” myself I’ve increased my upper limit to $165k. And after getting a bunch of listings from our real estate agent today it seems that was the right choice because the listings I printed out today appear to be much cleaner and a better deal than the ones we’ve already looked at.

Oh and the “reverse Walnut Tree” refers to an episode of Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares where the owner of the Walnut Tree restaurant refused to lower his prices to bring in more business. So a reverse of that would be refusing to raise my upper price limit to get a better house.

So we’ll likely do some drive-bys of the properties I’ve printed out today just so we get a feel for them before asking to see the insides. The one property I’m wondering why it’s so cheap because it’s huge, is a newer house, and is considerably less than what I’d expect to pay for that property. If it’s truly that good then I’ll probably make a serious offer on it as quickly as I can. But we have to see it first.

Y’know it’s funny how things shake out of the woodwork. My wife suggested that maybe I should quit my job and just take pictures of real estate for buyers so they can make decisions on the house without having to see it. And previous to this I had a dream that I was doing just that. I had started a business doing just those types of things - taking pictures for both buyers and sellers. So maybe that’s in the future. *shrug* But right now I don’t have time to consider that path.

Time’s a-wasting and we need to get something bought here soon. I’m fairly sure that we could get pre-qualified again without too much trouble but I don’t want to take that chance in this market. The annoying thing is that this whole thing is an inverse proportion problem. The longer we wait the chances of finding the perfect house increase while the chances of us getting finances for that house decrease.

Incredibly annoying from my point of view. We’re creating our own pressure for when we want to move and here is this OTHER pressure on top of everything that we really don’t need.

The worst part about it is that if we do lose our financing then we’re almost certainly renting until we can sock away at least $10k for a down-payment. And that will massively delay our search because renting _eats_ money without really giving anything but a place to live back. That makes it almost an order of magnitude harder to save money in that kind of environment. You become “rent poor” without having the benefit of at least gaining equity. Sucks big-time.

So we’ll try and look at more houses this weekend but since I’m off on Wednesday I’m hoping I’ll have time to do drive-by pictures at the very least. I can maybe get some drive-by pics for my wife and then we can decide if we want to see those houses. Nothing beats an in-person visit but the pictures can at least give an idea of the current curb appeal before we make an actual appointment.

Personally though I’m of the opinion that curb appeal means little as long as the house is solid and/or acceptable to us. I’m willing to live in what some would consider an “ugly” house until we fix things up. Most of what I’d be doing would be in the garage or inside the house anyway so the outside being “ugly” for a while doesn’t bother me.

But then I’m not your average appearance-obsessed humanoid on this planet... ;-)
